The Ten Posts for New Writers

Pen and moneySo now you have ten pieces of advice for new writers, or rather for writers who are developing a business orientation as well as working on their writing projects.

If you review the posts you’ll see I don’t have too much to say about the writing craft.  I focus on the business elements of a writer’s life.

That’s deliberate.

Most people who write need to devote a lot more time to the business of running a business.

The ten posts

Write every day – which wasn’t about writing your great work, but all about getting in lots of writing practice in a variety of contexts.

Read more – which reminded writers about the value to be gained from reading more than the classics.

Learn more – which talked about learning and about applying learning.

Promote yourself – which is an essential activity for every one in business.

Get a plan – which is needed in every successful undertaking.

Time management for writers – which reminded every one that time is a finite resource and you can’t make any more of it.

Accept that you will need help – which reminded writers that they shouldn’t be working away in isolation.

Accept that the publishing world has changed – which could have been titled: Live in the present, not in the past.

Get a website or three – which was all about the present, and the need to use the tools of the modern world effectively.

Get out more – which reminded writers that they need to be out there marketing themselves tirelessly and remorselessly.

These are my ten basics for writers.  If anyone would like to add to the list, the comments box is always there.
